Story & History Of Onam Festival

Story & History Of Onam Festival.

The day when Shravana nakshatra falls in the month of Shravan, that day is celebrated as Onam in Kerala.

The secret of this festival is related to king Bali Chakravarthi who was from Kerala.

king Bali Chakravarthi

He used to keep everyone happy in his kingdom.

Like the way we speak about Ram Rajya in North, in Kerala, we speak of Rajya of Bali Chakravarthi.

In his time, everyone was happy, No one was ill, Everyone got justice, and Everyone was equal.

That kind of a wonderful society existed under his reign, But he had a huge ego because of his charitable activities.

He could do anything to protect his position, But just with charity, one cannot get liberation.

If one thinks he is a very good man, they can not get liberation with compassion, Lord Vishnu manifested as Vamana avatar.

He approached the king in the form of a child, Vamana asked him for three steps of land.

Giving three steps of land to a small child is no big deal, though the king.

The king’s Guru, Shukracharya asked him to not give. he is not a child, he is Vishnu.

The king refused. He told him, “I have never said no to anyone. How can I say no to a child?”

Sometimes the disciple understands more than the Guru. The Guru realized there is no point in arguing with him.

With logic, you cannot understand everything, and the logic of some people cannot be countered.

Especially when it is the logic of a king. When the king was sprinkling water from the kamandal (as a gesture of donating land).

Guru Shukracharya became a black bee and blocked the flow of water from the kamandal.

Earlier it was believed that if the water does not come out of the kamandal, then the donator does not want to donate.

Vishnu was clever. He cleared the blockage with a Darbha grass, which rendered the Guru Shukracharya, the bee blind, Attachment with his student made the Guru blind.

Vamana avatar

When the water fell, Vaman assumed a huge form.

With one step he covered the sky. From another, he covered the Earth.

When he was taking the third step, king BaliChakravarthi realized that the giver is always one.

That he can donate only because of this one power.

So, he put his head under the feet of LordVamana and told him that his ego was bigger than the sky and earth and requested him to handle his ego.

Lord Vamana then, put his feet on the king and pushed him into Patal.

At a time when Vamana pushes king Bali Chakravarti to Patal, king Bali Chakravarti asks for a wish.

He asks to give a day to visit his people once a year, Lord Vamana allows him 10 Days to visit his people.

Thereafter, this day was celebrated as Onam days to welcome king Bali Chakravarti.
